First Lady Vanda Pignato Joins FMLN Campaign in El Salvador

First Lady or El Salvador Vanda Pignato said that the FMLN is the only party that can guarantee the continuation of needed social changes in El Salvador, and therefore, she decided to join the effort in the presidential campaign .

The First Lady of El Salvador and Secretary of Social Inclusion joined this past Saturday FMLN’s campaign, after requesting a formal leave from office to engage in partisan activities.

She said she took the initiative, among other reasons, because the FMLN’s is the only party which can give continuity to social projects in El Salvador such as Ciudad Mujer.

"El Salvador is experiencing a turning point and we all need to be committed to defend our future. For over four years, and even before, I have devoted all energy and love to be part of the struggle and dream of the Salvadoran people. I have asked a leave of absence from my position as the Secretary of Social Inclusion to work with the FMLN and ensure the social changes we have initiated in El Salvador in the next administration" said the First Lady in a press release.

The leave of absence from office was granted by the President Mauricio Funes in the terms requested.   During Pignato’s leave, the Secretariat of Social Inclusion will be exercised and performed by Carlos Rafael Urquilla, a close aide of the First Lady.

The absence of leave from office is established in Article 162 of the Constitution of El Salvador, and it is the duty of the President of the Republic to grant it or not to politically appointed public officials.
