Court Imposes $25,000 bail to Lacayo, ARNEA’s former Minister of Economy, in El Salvador, for failing to appear in Court.
This morning at 8 am, Miguel Lacayo, former Minister of Economy under ARENA Administration, charged with embezzlement, was fined with $25,000 for failing to come to the hearing. It is the first time the former official appeared publicly since the trial started against him.
In addition, Lacayo has been ordered by the Court not to change domicile, not to leave the country, check in with the Court’s clerk every 15 days, and not have contact with the witnesses of the case.
The charge of embezzlement is based on the signing of a suspicious contract between CEL (EL Salvador National Energy Operator) and Italian Enel Green Power, in 2002, for the use of geothermal energy, which supposedly injured state interests to benefit stockholders of Enel Green Power.
