Salvadoran American Coalition from 9 different states asks US Congress for neutrality in the upcoming elections in El Salvador

Members of The Salvadoran American Coalition for Democracy in El Salvador, a network of Salvadoran NGOs across the US, arrived in Washington, DC, this Thursday November 14, 2013, to ask their representatives in the US Congress for neutrality in the upcoming presidential elections in El Salvador on February 2, 2014.

The Coalition, comprised of community leaders, entrepreneurs and young people, met with approximately 40 congressmen from their districts. In these meetings, the Coalition’s members asked for support in 3 main points: 1) neutrality in El Salvador’s upcoming elections, 2) disbursement of the Millennium Challenge Corporation  Second Compact and 3) approval of the immigration reform.

The group also took the time to invite their fellow congressmen to visit EL Salvador as international observers in the 2014 elections.

Celina Benitez from the state of California said she asked her congress representative Lucille Roybal-Allard, the 3 main points scheduled on the agenda during the visit.

“As a Salvadoran citizen and as a US citizen, I have the right to seek my representative in the US Congress and ask for transparency and neutrality for El Salvador,” said Benitez, before entering the first of three scheduled meetings she had programed for the day.

On his part, Guillermo Mayora, a community leader from New York, thanked his representative in the US Congress, Eliot Engel, for publicly asking neutrality from the United States government in the electoral process in El Salvador.

By the end of the day the group successfully managed to visit approximately 40 members of the US Congress, including James McGovern from Massachusetts, Nydia M. Velasquez from New York, Ruben Hinojosa from Texas and President of the Caucus Hispanic in the US Congress Xavier Becerra from California, as well as Chris Van Hollen from the state of Maryland.

Among the congressmen, who signed the petition to promote neutrality and transparency in the Salvadoran upcoming elections, were Juan Vargas from California, James McGovern and Michael Kapuano from Massachusetts, and Karen Bass from California.
