LOS ANGELES, CA – On March 9, 2014, the citizens of El Salvador voted to select a new government to lead the country for the next five years. According to international observers, including the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations (UN), and hundreds of U.S. citizens, the elections were free and democratic. El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has been praised by observers for their great work and professionalism.Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) made the following statement:
“I join the U.S. State Department, the UN, the OAS, international observers, and many civil and religious organizations in recognizing the work of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).
I call upon all the stakeholders, including the citizens and political parties of El Salvador to respect and uphold the will of the people who participated in the March 9th elections, and to respect the final outcome announced by the TSE which has the legal mandate under the Salvadoran constitution to oversee elections.
We look forward to working closely with the new government of El Salvador, the president-elect Salvador Sánchez Céren, and the Salvadoran community in Los Angeles to build stronger cultural and economic ties.
In the spirit of strengthening democracy in El Salvador, I join my Salvadoran constituents in my district and thousands of Salvadoran residents in Los Angeles in asking the ARENA party to respect the will of the people of El Salvador and the results of the elections, and to work constructively with the newly elected president to further stabilize and encourage a democratic system in El Salvador.”
