Amid accusations of corruption, former President Francisco Flores leaves El Salvador

Former president of El Salvador, Francisco Flores, who is under investigation for alleged corruption charges during his administration, would have traveled Tuesday January 14th to the United States.

According to photos posted on social networks, former president Flores (1999-2004) was seen in Comalapa International Airport, with heavy suitcases waiting to board a plane to United States.

Passengers at El Salvador’s International Airport say that they saw Flores with 3 suitcases, Tuesday morning on the security line of flight 319, from Avianca, bound for Miami, Florida.

The presidential candidate of the opposition party, ARENA, Norman Quijano, faces a setback in EL Salvador presidential election of February 2, for the current accusations against Flores, who is, despite the possible corruption charges, still a top adviser of in ARENA’s campaign.

Within 20 days before the elections, the support for ARENA continues to erode, but Quijano still decided to keep Flores on his campaign team, against a collective clamor of ARENA followers and civil society at large to let him go.

About 50 social organizations describe as "arrogant and unfortunate" the statements that Flores made before the legislative committee (in which he admitted to receiving funds from Taiwan) and called the prosecutor to take action and set a precedent for the future.
